Once in a blue moon, a work of art is created that turns into a force of nature, a work whose meaning and effect on people is unmistakable. Johann Sebastian Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion” is undoubtedly one such work. This film focuses on the oratorio’s meaning and the great impact it’s had on those who perform it and those who hear it. Despite its wholly religious nature, Bach’s work touches on the roots of human suffering. It invites listeners, as one of the artists featured in the film explains, to cry along with it and to delve deep into one’s soul to mourn the beauty and ugliness of life.
