For those who haven’t heard of her, meet Bethann Hardison, a witty and charming entrepreneur and activist, and a pioneering Black fashion model. Hardison gained fame in the 1970s and was a role model for many other Black fashion models, thanks largely to her struggle for greater Black representation in a field that was long dominated by white women.
Now in her 70s, Hardison lives in a stunning home in upstate New York and is writing her memoir. In her entertaining, unapologetic way, she shares with viewers different moments from her life – from the fashion runways she made sure to walk with confidence that says, “I’m Black and I’m here,” to meetings to encourage young, diverse women to fight for a place in the fashion world and succeed, to the board rooms where she struggled for greater opportunities for Black models. The film features interviews with models Tyson Beckford, Iman, and Naomi Campbell, who views Hardison as a second mother.
