Kensington Market: Heart of the City

Kensington Market, in the heart of Toronto, is a neighborhood where time seems to have stood still. A handful of streets without skyscrapers, buildings preserved over the years, and above all a vibrant, multicultural human mosaic give the area its distinctive character. The neighborhood’s history includes a strong Jewish presence, traces of which are still visible today. Alongside it, you encounter descendants of immigrants from Africa and Asia, from Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries, small independent businesses, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.

But the skyscrapers are threatening to arrive here as well. The process of gentrification has already begun, and the residents interviewed in the film are worried about what it will bring. The story of the neighborhood reflects patterns of urban renewal familiar from cities around the world, and here too the concerns are voiced mainly by those who have always called it home. They ask: Where will low-income residents live? What will happen to the culture and art created here? What will become of the social fabric that has taken shape in this place? It’s not clear that anyone has good answers.
