“I am Arab, white, homosexual, and vegan,” says Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui in this film, “Whatever I do is political.” To this list we can add dancer, visionary behind Beyoncé music videos and performances, opera director, and one of the most original and respected choreographers working in dance today.
Cherkaoui is an award-winning artist, and after serving seven years as artistic director of the Royal Ballet of Flanders, he is now the artistic director of Le Grand Théâtre de Genève in Switzerland. Cherkaoui allowed the camera to follow him over two years, watching him design and create innovative dance pieces (he incorporates martial arts, for example). During filming, he also visited Morocco, his father’s birthplace, allowing viewers to learn about one of the cultural influences that Cherkaoui absorbed before becoming a successful artist. Cherkaoui admits that he tries to reinvent himself with every new work, so that he can avoid definition. Thanks to the film’s close and continuous documentation of him, it shows just how this great artist does it.
