An elderly man is interviewed for a film, as he sits on a chair in front of the camera. He’s clean-shaven, wears a jacket and glasses, and speaks in a relaxed, quiet, and matter-of-fact way. Then he’s seen in a studio, instructing young dancers and demonstrating for them with surprising ease and humor how he uses his entire body —“not just the shoulders!”— in the dance they are rehearsing. This is surprising, because Hans van Manen is over 90 years old. He is considered one of the greatest choreographers of contemporary dance and led elite Dutch dance companies for more than 50 years.

This film follows Van Manen over several years, documenting his efforts to improve, innovate, and reach perfection with his craft, while remaining pleasant and entertaining. Interviews with other artists convey why Van Manen’s art and innovation have garnered admiration. The interviews with him shed light on how he combined classical ballet and modern dance, and cover everything from music to his venerable age.
