Anyone who remembers the talented actor Assi Dayan only from his final years will discover him here, at age 22, as he was in the 1960s: the beautiful Sabra, the symbol of the “new Israeli” – just like the hero of this movie, Uri, whom he portrays. The film is an ode to the Israel and “Israeliness” of long ago. It is based on Moshe Shamir’s popular novel from 1947, considered a seminal text in Israeli literature, and the successful play, based on the book, that was staged in Israeli theaters. The plot is a tragic love story between Uri, a kibbutznik who joins the Palmach (the pre-state Jewish underground militia), and is killed in battle, and Mika, a newcomer “from there” – a Holocaust survivor. The film was directed by Yosef Millo, one of the most successful theater directors in Israel, while the music and lyrics by prominent Israeli composer Sasha Argov have since become classics.

Based on the novel by. Moshe Shamìr
